PLDT Inc. said broadband competition is increasingly evolving beyond headline download speeds as consumers place greater importance on responsiveness and consistency for gaming, AI tools and other real-time applications.

A SpeedGeo Q1 2026 report showed Converge ICT Solutions Inc. posting the fastest average download speed at 129.7 megabits per second, slightly ahead of PLDT’s 120.7 Mbps, while upload performance between the two operators was virtually tied.

“From our perspective, while speed is important, latency and consistency is what the Filipino subscriber truly values. Speed metric is becoming more of a marketing slant,” said PLDT chief operations officer Menardo "Butch" Jimenez Jr.

The report also showed PLDT recording lower latency or ping at 23.7 milliseconds compared to Converge’s 32.3 milliseconds.

Lower latency directly affects responsiveness in applications such as cloud services, video conferencing, online gaming and real-time collaboration tools.

Jimenez noted that broadband quality is increasingly being measured through overall responsiveness and consistency as digital usage becomes more interactive and data-heavy.
