The company, in a statement, said its membership will strengthen efforts to develop science-based methods for measuring and lowering the carbon footprint of delivering online content.
As the first edge cloud platform provider to participate in DIMPACT, Fastly will contribute infrastructure expertise and real-world edge network data to help media, streaming and publishing companies better understand emissions generated through digital content delivery.
The collaboration also aims to improve transparency in emissions reporting across the industry.
Why it matters
The rapid growth of digital media consumption, coupled with rising AI-generated internet traffic, has placed greater attention on the environmental impact of digital services.
Companies are increasingly examining Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions, or indirect emissions generated throughout their value chains, making accurate digital emissions measurement an emerging sustainability priority.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Fastly to the DIMPACT initiative. Their participation strengthens DIMPACT's ability to advance a more accurate, data-driven approach to measuring and reducing digital emissions,” SLR Consulting executive sponsor of DIMPACT director Jason Bell said in the statement.
“Accurately calculating digital emissions requires a deep understanding of every hop data taken from the origin to the end-user device. Fastly’s expertise at the edge fills a crucial piece of the puzzle, moving the industry closer to a transparent, standardised blueprint for digital decarbonization,” he added.
Driving digital decarbonization
DIMPACT brings together industry leaders, researchers and policymakers to develop practical tools, research and best practices that help organisations reduce the environmental impact of digital media products.
The coalition promotes collaboration across the digital ecosystem, recognising that emissions are shared across multiple technology providers and content distributors.
Fastly said it sees digital sustainability as a core part of the internet's future, alongside performance and security.
“As digital content, including AI-generated traffic, continues to reshape the internet, we want to empower the digital media sector with the granular data and actionable insights needed for companies to understand and optimise their digital footprints,” Fastly senior sustainability specialist Eoghan Kelly said. “We are committed to industry-wide collaboration to ensure the internet of the future is not just faster and more secure, but also more sustainable,” Kelly said.
“We’re looking forward to collaborating with DIMPACT participants and supporting the industry in moving towards the decarbonisation of digital content distribution,” Kelly added. —Vanessa Hidalgo | Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
