Insider Spotlight
📍 Why it matters:
This initiative comes amid growing climate resilience challenges and is part of San Miguel’s broader corporate sustainability effort. The tree-planting activities, held in 48 locations across the country, mobilized 2,457 employees under the company’s Team Malasakit program, which promotes volunteerism in community and environmental development.
📍 Zoom in:
To mark the 10th anniversary of Team Malasakit and Philippine Arbor Day, 225 San Miguel volunteers recently planted 2,000 native tree seedlings at Mount Purro Nature Reserve in Antipolo. The site, part of the Sierra Madre range, plays a crucial role in shielding Metro Manila and Rizal from floods. This brings the company’s cumulative total for the area to 4,600 trees.
📍 What they’re saying:
“Tree planting, when done consistently and at scale, makes a big difference. I’m grateful to our people for continuing to take part in this effort,” said San Miguel president and CEO Ramon Ang.
📍 What’s next:
For the remainder of 2025, San Miguel has lined up 21 more planting events involving 1,351 volunteers. These are expected to add another 7,675 seedlings and over 4,000 volunteer hours to the program .
📍 The bigger picture:
The grassroots effort complements San Miguel’s larger reforestation program, particularly San Miguel Global Power’s Project 747. That program has already planted more than 6.5 million trees and mangroves, with survival rates of 91 percent for upland trees and 89 percent for mangrove propagules. It is on track to exceed its original 7-million-tree goal.
📍 Between the lines:
San Miguel subsidiary San Miguel Properties has committed to donate an additional 80,000 seedlings to support forest recovery in Bataan.
📍 Local insight:
“We are not just planting trees — we are planting love for the environment. We don’t just plant and leave. We plant and return,” said Mount Purro founder Alberto “Toto” Malvar .
