Atlas unit powers copper mine with PH’s first megawatt-scale floating solar

Carmen Copper has flipped the switch on the country’s first megawatt-scale floating solar farm, a key step toward cleaner mining operations.

The mining unit of Atlas Consolidated Mining and Development Corp. successfully launched a 3-hectare floating solar facility on the Malubog Reservoir within its Toledo City site.

The installation now supplies 10 percent of the mine’s energy needs using 8,540 solar panels.

“This initiative reflects Carmen Copper’s commitment to responsible mining and environmental stewardship, while aligning with the Department of Energy’s target to have renewable energy account for at least half of the country’s total power capacity by 2040,” said Atty. Axel G. Tumulak, head of legal, compliance, and corporate governance.

Clean energy on water

Designed by Black & Veatch, the solar array generates up to 4.99 MW and can scale to 50 MW—enough to run the entire mine on renewable power.

A new substation and 6-kilometer distribution line were built for the project, which took 15 months and zero lost-time injuries to complete.
