Apple Pay arrives in Philippines with four 4 banks, dozens of merchants

Apple has officially launched Apple Pay in the Philippines, bringing the iPhone maker’s contactless payment service to one of Southeast Asia’s fastest-growing digital payments markets.

Customers with eligible cards issued by Chinabank, GoTyme Bank, Metrobank and UnionBank can use Apple Pay on their iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad and Mac to make purchases in stores, apps and online.

The launch also comes with support from 45 in-store merchants, while Maya Business will begin enabling Apple Pay acceptance for more than 5,000 online merchants.

“The Philippines is home to a digital-first generation that is rapidly embracing a vision for a cashless future,” said Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet.

“We’re thrilled to bring Apple Pay to users in the Philippines, making it easier than ever to pay with the privacy and security they expect from the devices they love,” she said.

How Apple Pay works

Users can add eligible debit and credit cards to Apple Wallet on an iPhone or Apple Watch.

To pay in stores, users simply double-click the side button, authenticate using Face ID or Touch ID and hold their device near a contactless payment terminal.

Apple said card numbers are never stored on the device or its servers. Instead, each payment uses an encrypted device account number stored securely on the device.
