The proposal, endorsed during ABAC’s third meeting in Bangkok, seeks to expand air links among APEC economies, making it easier for people to travel for business, education and tourism while supporting regional supply chains.
“The discussions at ABAC reaffirm that deeper regional cooperation is not just good for businesses and industries—it is good for every Filipino,” Tan said in a statement on Monday.
Broader agenda
Tan said the recommendations carry particular significance for the Philippines as the country prepares for an artificial intelligence-driven economy, strengthens its digital competitiveness and expands opportunities for Filipino workers, businesses and investors.
Beyond the Open Skies initiative, ABAC also adopted recommendations on artificial intelligence, trade, food security, connectivity and sustainable growth that will be presented to APEC leaders during their annual dialogue in November.
Philippine priorities
During the Bangkok meeting, Tan also advanced Philippine priorities on artificial intelligence and sustainability while chairing the ASEAN-ABAC Caucus, which identified initiatives to strengthen regional economic cooperation.
The renewed aviation proposal does not address visa policies but seeks to improve regional connectivity by encouraging more air links across APEC economies.
If adopted by governments, the recommendations could strengthen cross-border tourism, business travel and investment as the Asia-Pacific deepens economic integration.
