The big picture
Alternergy is among the few renewable developers in the country pursuing a triple play strategy, diversifying revenues across three renewable technologies whose generation profiles complement each other across seasons. The approach is designed to provide more stable output while scaling the company’s asset base.
Driving the news
The 28-MW Balsik solar power project has completed testing and commissioning and has begun generating electricity.
“Our 28-MW Balsik solar power project has completed testing and commissioning and has started generating,” Alternergy chair Vincent Perez told InsiderPH.
Balsik is the 11th solar asset in the Alternergy Group portfolio. The project is expected to deliver about 46,000 megawatt hours (MWh) of clean power annually to industrial and commercial customers, while avoiding an estimated 31,000 tons of carbon emissions each year.
What’s next
Alternergy is also nearing generation at its first hydro project, the 5-MW Dupinga run-of-river hydro project. The facility has achieved electro-mechanical completion and is preparing for testing and commissioning.
“The Dupinga project is a testament to our long-term dedication and perseverance. Hydro projects, whether mini or large, are inherently long gestation. After navigating many challenges, we are now on the cusp of delivering generation revenues from this project,” Perez said.
Once operational, Dupinga will supply electricity as an embedded generation source to Nueva Ecija Electric Cooperative 2 – Area 2, supporting the cooperative’s Renewable Portfolio Standards compliance.
On the ground
Construction has accelerated at Alternergy’s two wind developments, the 128-MW Tanay wind project and the 64-MW Alabat wind project. Both sites are installing wind turbine generators with 8-MW rated capacity, the largest to be deployed in the country to date.
Despite logistical challenges, including transport during the recent typhoon season, turbine components were delivered successfully. The projects built temporary jetties and reinforced bridges in coordination with local governments and communities.
Looking ahead
“We are entering the homestretch of completing four diverse renewable projects in 2026 that will bring additional generating assets to our existing portfolio, a significant boost to Alternergy’s growth trajectory,” said Perez, who served as the country's energy secretary from 2001 to 2005.
“With the completion this year of 225 MW in new capacities and the start of development works of our GEA 4 winning projects totaling 500 MW, Alternergy is expanding with strategic purpose at multiple fronts toward our goal of One Green Gigawatt by 2030,” he added. — Daxim L. Lucas
