Why it matters

The campaign demonstrates how communication can go beyond safety reminders and compliance requirements to influence behavior, strengthen personal accountability and encourage employees to take an active role in workplace safety.

The winning entry, “SHES First. Excellence Always.: Aboitiz Construction’s Behavior-Driven Safety Communication Campaign,” centered on the company’s SHES Month 2025 initiative.

How it works

Rolled out as an organization-wide change communication campaign, the program combined interactive safety campaigns, wellness programs, environmental initiatives, leadership reinforcement and digital engagement platforms.

The campaign was designed to reinforce proactive safety behaviors and holistic employee well-being while embedding SHES principles into daily operations.

The program contributed to sustaining 35 million safe man-hours without a Lost Time Incident while fostering shared responsibility for safety across the workforce, according to a company release.

Aboitiz Construction executive director Antonio Peñalver said the recognition validates the company’s approach to making safety a priority across its operations.

“Receiving this recognition validates our continuous commitment to prioritizing safety across all our project sites. This award reflects not only the hard work of our teams, but also demonstrates the vital role that strategic communication plays in cultivating a strong, behavior-driven safety culture across the entire organization,” Peñalver said.

The bigger picture

Aboitiz Construction’s approach puts employee participation alongside policies and procedures, using communication and leadership reinforcement to make safety a shared responsibility across project sites.

The Philippine Quill Awards is organized annually by the International Association of Business Communicators Philippines. Entries are evaluated against IABC global standards covering strategic thinking, execution and measurable business impact.

For Aboitiz Construction, the recognition reinforces the role of strategic communication in supporting safety standards as it operates across heavy and light industries, infrastructure and industrial maintenance nationwide. — Princess Daisy C. Ominga | Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
