Tuguegarao hospital shifts to geothermal power via First Gen

Divine Mercy Wellness and Medical Center (DMWMC), a leading healthcare institution in Tuguegarao City, has partnered with First Gen Corp. to transition its electricity consumption to renewable geothermal power, reinforcing the hospital’s sustainability and decarbonization efforts.

Powered by geothermal energy

Following the signing of the agreement, DMWMC coordinated with First Gen for the direct supply of geothermal energy sourced from the Tongonan Geothermal Power Plant in Leyte, operated by First Gen subsidiary Energy Development Corp. (EDC).

The partnership is implemented under the government’s Green Energy Option Program (GEOP), which allows qualified electricity consumers with at least 100 kilowatts of average peak demand to source their entire power requirement from renewable energy providers.

Supporting healthcare and sustainability goals

DMWMC president Godofredo Cruz said the shift aligns environmental responsibility with the hospital’s mission of delivering quality healthcare.

“Our partnership with First Gen reinforces our commitment to environmental stewardship while ensuring the provision of high-quality healthcare. By embracing renewable energy, we reduce our carbon footprint and contribute to a more sustainable future for the communities we serve,” Cruz said.

DMWMC is a 100-bed hospital staffed by over 200 medical specialists, offering 24/7 radiology, pathology, and laboratory services, along with other ancillary healthcare services. The facility is part of the Mount Grace Hospitals network, under the Unilab Group.

Reliable power for critical facilities

First Gen chief customer engagement officer Carlo Vega highlighted the importance of reliable clean energy for hospitals.

“Geothermal power provides a clean, reliable, and consistent energy source—qualities that are vital for hospitals. We are privileged to support DMWMC as we advance decarbonization efforts and champion environmental and community well-being,” Vega said.

First Gen currently operates 1,700 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy capacity from geothermal, hydro, wind, and solar sources.

To strengthen national energy security and complement intermittent renewable supply, the company also holds a 40-percent stake in four gas-fired power plants with a combined capacity of 2,017 MW, majority-owned by Prime Infrastructure Capital Inc. —Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
