PH banks join global institutions hit by international tech glitch

Several banks are experiencing downtime amid reports of a global technical glitch that has mainly affected users of Microsoft-based systems.

Users reported being unable to access their online accounts and apps at the country’s largest lenders, including BDO Unibank Inc., Metropolitan Bank and Trust (Metrobank) and Union Bank of the Philippines.

UnionBank restoring systems

“Microsoft-based systems down for a while. We have managed to restore most,” UnionBank CEO Edwin Bautista told InsiderPH.

He added that ATMs and credit card payment services were not affected

“We are gradually restoring affected systems,” he said.

Metrobank president Fabian Dee said some of their systems also experienced service disruptions.

"The effects have been sporadic across different channels. It's worldwide. Banks are not the only ones affected," he told InsiderPH, adding that funds of Metrobank’s depositors are secure.

Land Bank of the Philippines issued an advisory to customers on intermittent services.

"You may be encountering intermittence in some of our digital channels due to the current Microsoft global outage," it said.

This is global issue that has affected services at banks and even airlines overseas, based on a report by Bloomberg.
