UPS presses ahead with Philippines expansion after announcing 30,000 job cuts

US-based shipping giant United Parcel Service said it is on track to open a new air hub in the Philippines in the latter part of the year, a notable investment as the company unveiled another round of mass layoffs.

The planned hub comes as UPS reshapes its business away from lower-margin volumes linked to e-commerce giant Amazon, which is set to be completed in six months.

“June of 2026 will be the inflection point. Our strategy is not a shrink the company strategy, but rather one where we grow in the best parts of the market,” said UPS CEO Carol Tomé during their year-end investors’ briefing on Wednesday.

Cuts alongside growth

UPS announced it will eliminate another 30,000 operational roles this year.

The move follows 48,000 job cuts in 2025 wit reductions mainly tied to the Amazon unwind.

While investing more on automation, UPS said it will continue strategic expansion efforts.

In its presentation to investors, UPS said it’s proceeding with plans of “opening new air hub in the Philippines in late 2026”.

The firm previously said it would expand in Clark International Airport, which is operated by the Gokongwei-Gotianun consortium known as Luzon International Premiere Airport Development Corp.

Big savings, refleeting program

UPS chief financial officer Brian Dykes said the company is targeting $3 billion in savings in 2026.

The so-called inflection point marks the end of an 18-month glide-down, or gradual reduction, of Amazon shipping volumes that concludes in June 2026.

Dykes said UPS has completed the accelerated retirement of its MD-11 fleet and expects delivery of 18 new Boeing 767 aircraft over the next 15 months.
