The Philippines rejoins global maritime whitelist, securing 50,000 seafarer jobs

The Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) said on Tuesday that the Philippines was recognized anew for its commitment to maintaining high standards in maritime education, protecting the jobs of thousands of Filipino seafarers.

"Our goal is to entrench the position of the Philippines as the Maritime Capital of the World by continuously supplying the global maritime industry with high standards Filipino seafarers,”Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista said in a statement on Wednesday.

Being on the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) whitelist signifies that Filipino seafarers have met the rigorous international standards set by the IMO Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping Convention.

Bautista said this also supports the government’s goal to establish the Philippines as the “‘marine capital of the world”.

The Department of Transportation and Marina have been implementing corrective actions following the 2022 IMO independent evaluation, ensuring the security of Filipino seafarers on European-flagged vessels.
