Queen Maxima Pushes for Better Financial Health Among Filipinos

Her Majesty Queen Máxima of the Netherlands, in her role as the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Advocate for Inclusive Finance for Development (UNSGSA), concludes today a three-day visit to the Philippines, during which she pushed for greater financial inclusion and enhanced financial health and resilience for Filipinos.

Despite progress, with bank account ownership rising to 51.4% in 2021, around 37.6 million Filipino adults remain unbanked, according to a statement from the UNSGSA.

Financial worries are prevalent, with 42% of adults concerned about medical costs and 24% about managing monthly expenses.

Queen Máxima is highlighting digital ID and payment system developments and engage with leaders to support their expansion.

She is visiting Manila and surrounding areas, meeting financial service users and exploring last-mile solutions.

Her agenda included high-level meetings with President Marcos, Finance Secretary Ralph Recto, and BSP Governor Eli Remolona Jr. to foster partnerships for financial sector innovations.
