Toyota Motor Philippines Corp. (TMP) is seeking faster implementation of government automotive programs to strengthen domestic manufacturing, attract investments, and help Filipino suppliers compete in regional and global markets.

The call comes as Toyota Group export suppliers face softer demand and global trade uncertainties, with export sales projected to decline slightly to $1.06 billion in 2026 from $1.09 billion in 2025.

Government-industry collaboration

During the 27th Toyota Special Economic Zone (TSEZ) Update Meeting with the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (Peza), TMP president Masando Hashimoto highlighted the importance of government-industry collaboration in sustaining local production and exports.

Peza Director General Tereso Panga said Toyota's 13 export suppliers have generated more than P34 billion in cumulative investments and over 45,000 direct jobs. Five companies operating within the TSEZ employ more than 7,000 Filipinos.

With over P34 billion in cumulative investments and more than 45,000 direct jobs generated by its 13 export suppliers, Toyota is reinforcing the importance of policy support in keeping the Philippines competitive in the global automotive industry. | Contributed photo

Dual strategy

Toyota supports the government's dual strategy of sustaining conventional vehicle manufacturing while developing capabilities in electric vehicles and automotive parts production.

TMP reiterated its readiness to participate in the Revitalizing the Automotive Industry for Competitiveness Enhancement program, with plans to register the locally manufactured Tamaraw once the government's Joint Administrative Order and implementing guidelines are completed.

The Electric Vehicle Incentive Strategy could also create opportunities for Filipino suppliers to participate in the transition toward electrified mobility.

Digital marketplace

Toyota emphasized the need for stronger supplier matching and capability development to help local manufacturers meet automotive industry requirements for cost, quality, and delivery.

Peza is developing sourcing opportunities through supplier matching initiatives and a digital marketplace connecting economic zone locators with Philippine businesses.

“Many companies are beginning to discover that, instead of sourcing certain processes from abroad, the capabilities they require may already be available here in the Philippines,” Panga said in a press statement.

Dual manufacturing strategy

Toyota is also seeking government coordination to address electricity costs, customs processing, regulatory requirements, and tax assessments.

TMP stressed that fulfilling commitments under the Comprehensive Automotive Resurgence Strategy Program remains essential to transitioning toward the government's dual manufacturing strategy.

Peza reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Toyota's operations and strengthening the Philippines' competitiveness as an automotive manufacturing and investment destination. —Vanessa Hidalgo | Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
