PLDT and Smart presented an in-house innovation that integrates localized natural hazard mapping and real-time network monitoring into a single visual dashboard.
Homegrown tech for resilience
The system proactively maintains service continuity, minimizes network downtime, and ensures the safety of both employees and customer communities.
This solution was developed by Ralph John Suyman, PLDT network facilities management officer-in-charge for Mindanao; Gabriel Elopre, Smart senior environment, health, and safety specialist; and Erich Stephen Lagura, PLDT environment, social, and governance (ESG) data analyst, who presented the project at the UNGC stage with the Corporate Sustainability Office.
Harnessing AI and IoT for safer connectivity
The innovation leverages Artificial Intelligence (AI) to assess the impact of natural hazards on network facilities and employs the Internet of Things (IoT) for 24/7 remote monitoring.
It includes automated alerts and reporting tools to support field engineers — often among the first responders after disasters — in rapidly restoring communications.
Lagura emphasized that connectivity is vital during crises:
“During disasters, our services help keep people safe and businesses running. In good times and in bad — connectivity is a lifeline,” he said. “Our job is to continuously deliver connectivity, especially when Filipinos need it most.”
Strengthening PH’s climate resilience
For the fourth straight year, the Philippines topped the WorldRiskIndex, underscoring its vulnerability to climate-related disasters such as typhoons and earthquakes. In response, PLDT and Smart continue to fortify network infrastructure and advance technologies that bolster the nation’s disaster preparedness and resilience.
The companies plan to expand deployment of the integrated dashboard across more typhoon-prone and remote areas by year-end. They also aim to partner with local governments to enhance community-level disaster response.
Championing young Filipino innovators
PLDT chair and CEO Manuel V. Pangilinan praised the young team for exemplifying the company’s mission of “inspiring innovation and meaningful connections through generations.”
“This achievement proves that our young talents are helping build a more resilient PLDT and Smart — ready to face the challenges of today and tomorrow,” Pangilinan said.
The project was PLDT and Smart’s official entry to the UNGC SDG Innovation Accelerator for Young Professionals, reflecting their commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goals 8, 9, 11, and 13 — on decent work, innovation, sustainable cities, and climate action. —Ed: Corrie S.
