The Manuel V. Pangilinan-led utility firm recently commissioned the 115 kilovolt (kV) – 34.5 kV gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) substation with an initial capacity of 83 megavolt amperes (MVA). The facility is designed to enhance grid reliability and service efficiency in one of the capital’s most densely populated districts.
The Sampaloc GIS Substation is expected to support a number of vital institutions, including the Jose R. Reyes Memorial Medical Center, Dominican School Manila, and the University of Santo Tomas, among others.
“The project is part of Meralco’s continuing investments to strengthen its distribution infrastructure and ensure a safe, stable, and reliable supply of electricity for customers,” the company said in a statement.
The development comes as Metro Manila experiences sustained growth in energy demand driven by population expansion, urban development, and economic activity.
Meralco has committed to further modernizing its power distribution assets through strategic investments in infrastructure, digitalization, and resiliency initiatives in line with the government’s energy security goals. —Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
