Globe boosts data center investments as PH digital demand rises

Globe is expanding its investments in data center infrastructure as growing demand for cloud services, artificial intelligence (AI), streaming, gaming, and enterprise applications drives the Philippines’ digital economy.

The telco said its strategic investment in ST Telemedia Global Data Centres (STT GDC) Philippines forms part of its broader push to build digital infrastructure, alongside submarine cable systems, to support the country’s rising connectivity and computing requirements.

“Digital infrastructure works hand in hand with today’s advanced technologies,” Globe president and CEO Carl Cruz said.

“It enables businesses to operate, governments to deliver services, and people to stay connected. As demand continues to grow, it’s equally important that we build this infrastructure responsibly so it creates lasting value for businesses, communities, and the country,” he added.

Market seen tripling by 2030

The Philippine data center market was valued at around $633 million in 2024 and is projected to reach $1.97 billion by 2030, according to Research and Markets.

That would represent annual growth of more than 20 percent, fueled by increasing demand for services requiring large-scale storage and processing of digital information.

The Philippines has around 97.5 million internet users, providing a large market for online services and applications that rely on data centers.

Data centers house computing and networking equipment that support services ranging from online transactions and bank transfers to video calls, cloud applications, streaming platforms, and AI.

As reliance on such services increases, Globe said investments in data centers must also address reliability, resilience, security, and their environmental footprint.

Focus on resilient, efficient facilities

STT GDC Philippines president and CEO Carlo Malana said customers are increasingly looking beyond computing capacity when selecting data center providers.

“They want infrastructure that is reliable, energy efficient, resilient, and designed to support their long-term growth,” Malana said.

STT GDC Philippines said its facilities include resilient power systems, security measures, and business continuity capabilities aimed at keeping digital services operating around the clock.

The company has also adopted measures to reduce the environmental impact of its operations.

At its Fairview campus, STT GDC Philippines installed a closed-loop cooling system that recycles water within the facility, reducing its reliance on municipal water while supporting growing computing workloads.

The project also used recycled steel and other lower-carbon materials where possible to reduce its construction footprint.

Supporting digital growth

Beyond infrastructure development, STT GDC Philippines said its expanding operations are creating engineering and technical jobs and supporting economic activity in surrounding communities.

The company also undertakes education and livelihood programs and develops shared public spaces as part of its community initiatives.

Demand for data centers is expected to increase further as businesses and consumers adopt more cloud-based platforms and emerging technologies, particularly AI, which can require substantial computing capacity.

Globe sees data centers becoming an increasingly important component of the infrastructure supporting the Philippines’ digital transformation.

“We make sure that we create infrastructure that is resilient, responsible, and ready to support the Philippines for many years to come,” Cruz said. —Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
