Among the key projects are the Cebu-Lapu-Lapu 230-kilovolt (kV) transmission line and the Lapu-Lapu 230 kV substation, both slated for completion by the end of 2026, according to Michael Baylosis, Visayas transmission planning manager at the privately operated power transmission company.
Key new and expansion projects
At the Power 101 forum held at Bai Hotel in Mandaue City on July 31, Michael Baylosis said NGCP is also expanding at least seven substations located in the cities of Toledo and Mandaue, as well as in the municipalities of Samboan, Daanbantayan, and Compostela.
According to Baylosis, these projects aim to meet the rising power demand and support the anticipated economic growth across Cebu province.
He added that the initiatives would help ensure a stable and reliable power supply throughout the entire area.
Efforts to meet growing demand
At present, Baylosis noted that the existing 138-kilovolt (kV) transmission lines supplying power from Cebu to Mactan Island are experiencing overloading.
The island, known for its world-renowned resorts and beaches, continues to attract a growing number of tourists, adding to the strain on the power system.
He emphasized the urgent need to address this load growth and enhance the reliability of electricity supply across the province.
Completed projects
So far, NGCP has completed two major infrastructure projects: the Cebu-Negros-Panay (CNP) 230-kilovolt transmission line, inaugurated in April 2024, and the Cebu-Bohol Interconnection Project (CBIP), which was commissioned in December 2024
“The Cebu-Negros-Panay 230 kV backbone enables the exchange of more reliable and stable power by strengthening inter-island connectivity, which is crucial in meeting the growing economic demand of both Cebu and the Negros-Panay Islands,” Baylosis said.
He added that CBIP marks a significant upgrade to Central Visayas' power infrastructure, helping to meet the increasing electricity demand in Bohol while reinforcing Cebu’s strategic role as the region’s primary power hub.
