The expanded sewer lines form part of Maynilad’s ongoing wastewater infrastructure development aimed at improving sanitation and reducing pollution across the West Zone.
Supporting wastewater facilities
Sewer pipelines are typically laid deeper than water lines, requiring complex coordination with multiple agencies for road restoration and utility alignment.
Despite these challenges, Maynilad continues to invest in wastewater facilities that play a vital role in protecting public health and the environment.
24 WRFs now operational
As of mid-2025, Maynilad operates 24 Water Reclamation Facilities (WRFs) across its concession area. These plants have a combined treatment capacity of 743.5 million liters per day (MLD).
“We continue to expand our wastewater infrastructure to help meet long-term sanitation needs and environmental standards,” said Engr. Zmel Grabillo, Maynilad’s head of wastewater management.
“Beyond treatment plant construction, the installation of underground sewer lines is a critical component of this effort.”
Future expansion plans
Under its P163-billion capital investment program for 2023 to 2027, Maynilad is building five additional WRFs with a combined 314 MLD capacity, alongside 60 kilometers of new sewer pipelines.
Looking further ahead, Maynilad’s business plan calls for 10 more WRFs and over 300 kilometers of sewer lines by 2047.
These projects are expected to boost sewerage coverage to 76 percent by 2046, with scheduled sanitation services covering the balance. —Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
