Under the baton of Professor Emeritus Josefino Chino Toledo, UPSO promises a performance that is both solemn and jubilant, offering a stirring retelling of the Nativity story through one of the most enduring works in the choral canon.
Toledo has also added a whimsical touch to this year's program, playfully dubbed “Handel with Care.”
The concert will blend excerpts from “Messiah" with Christmas-themed movie music, an audience sing-along, and a special appearance by folksinger Ginoong Jason, presenting light-hearted contrasts to Handel’s revered masterpiece.
A cherished UP tradition
“The free Christmas concert of our Orkestra ng Bayan and choirs has become a revered university tradition to ring in the spirit of hope and joy,” said UP College of Music Dean Patricia Brillantes-Silvestre.
With seats limited, she encouraged audiences to register online at upsopasko2025.eventbrite.com to secure admission.
Handel’s Messiah, known for its iconic Hallelujah chorus, pairs devotional text with soaring Baroque composition.
The oratorio—completed in an astonishing 24 days—premiered in Dublin in 1742 and gradually became one of the most performed choral works in Western music.
Spotlight on emerging talent
This year's concert introduces four rising talents from the UP College of Music who are making their Messiah solo debuts: Krisleen Andya Bareng (soprano), Andrey Sto. Domingo (countertenor), Mark Nicholson Jaluag (tenor), and Jhon Michael Mauricio (bass).
The performance will also feature the 2025 chorus class, mentored by esteemed conducting faculty Beverly Shangkuan-Cheng, Jai Sabas Aracama, and Mark Anthony Carpio. They will perform alongside the UPSO Symphonic Chorus, led by assistant conductor Noemi Binag.
The bottom line
With its blend of tradition, emerging artistry, and community celebration, UPSO’s Christmas concert reaffirms its role as a musical beacon for the university and broader public. —Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
