PLDT, Smart equip rural farmers with digital tools through FarmTech Program

PLDT and Smart Communications Inc., in partnership with the Department of Agriculture – Agricultural Training Institute (DA-ATI), have equipped farmer associations in Bukidnon, Lanao del Norte, Maguindanao del Sur, and Davao del Sur with essential digital tools to enhance agricultural productivity through the FarmTech program.

FarmTech serves as a technology-driven farmers’ training kit designed to empower agricultural cooperatives and associations by improving their digital literacy.

A critical component of the Digital Farmers Program (DFP), FarmTech seeks to bridge the digital divide in rural areas, enabling farmers to integrate technology into their daily operations for greater efficiency.

The FarmTech kit includes portable and rechargeable tools such as tablets, smartphones, projectors, sound systems, and comprehensive digital learning materials. These resources allow farmer trainers to deliver knowledge in remote communities with ease, boosting access to innovative agricultural technologies.

Wilmar Ompoc, president of the Sto. Niño Organic Rice Farmers in Malaybalay City, expressed gratitude for the initiative. “Before, our equipment was difficult to transport to the farming communities. Now, with the portable and rechargeable projector and sound system, and other equipment in the FarmTech kit, it will be much easier to carry and use as we train our fellow farmers on digital tools.”

Loida Magoncia, agricultural technologist from the Davao del Sur Provincial Agriculturist Office (PAGRO), highlighted the program’s benefits. “This initiative empowers our farmers to adopt innovative technologies, leading to increased efficiency and productivity,” she said.

FarmTech is part of PLDT and Smart Communities, the PLDT Group’s shared value program promoting growth through technology-driven solutions in education, inclusion, livelihood, digital wellness, and disaster resilience. Now in its 21st year, the program supports the government's push for nationwide digitalization.

By introducing inclusive technologies, PLDT and Smart enable farmers and fisherfolk to access livelihood opportunities, aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), particularly No Poverty (SDG 1) and Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8).
