QUICK LOOK | Palay output seen to rise 13.4%, corn 26.7% in Q2

The Philippines is on track to post stronger palay and corn outputs in the second quarter of 2025, with government estimates based on standing crops as of May 1 showing significant improvements in both production volume and harvest areas compared to the same period last year.

Palay:

  • Q2 2025 production is projected to reach 4.36 million metric tons, up 13.4 percent from 3.85 million metric tons in Q2 2024 and 0.6 percent higher than the April 1 projection of 4.34 million metric tons.

  • Harvest area is expected to expand by 9.2 percent to 972.73 thousand hectares (vs. 890.60 thousand hectares in 2024).

  • Yield per hectare estimated at 4.48 metric tons, improving 3.7 percent from 4.32 metric tons in the same period last year.

  • As of May 1, 63 percent (612.65 thousand hectares) of the expected harvest area has already been reaped, producing 2.82 million metric tons of palay.

  • Crop stages: 34.5 percent vegetative, 19.6 percent  reproductive, 45.9 percent  maturing.

Corn:

  • Projected Q2 2025 corn output stands at 1.487 million metric tons, a 26.7- percent increase from 1.17 million metric tons in Q2 2024 but 0.1 percent lower from the April 1 estimate of 1.489 million metric tons.

  • Harvest area seen rising by 16.1 percent to 402.69 thousand hectares.

  • Yield per hectare is expected to grow by 9.2 percent to 3.69 metric tons (from 3.38 in 2024).

  • 55.1 percent of the total planted area (221.69 thousand hectares) harvested as of May 1, producing 915.86 thousand metric tons.

  • Crop stages: 39.4 percent vegetative23.9 percent reproductive36.7 percent maturing.
