German shipping line Hapag-Lloyd marked its first direct port call in the Philippines with the arrival of the Tokyo Express at the Manila International Container Terminal (MICT) on March 17, signaling the start of its new China-Philippines feeder service.

The feeder service provides a direct link between the Chinese port of Nansha and Philippine ports, including Batangas, Manila, and Subic Bay. It also connects through regional transshipment hubs such as Tanjung Pelepas in Malaysia and Singapore. Hapag-Lloyd has deployed both the Tokyo Express and Seoul Express for the service.

In a statement, International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI) — which operates MICT — said the new route strengthens the Philippines’ trade connectivity by offering importers and exporters a more efficient path to regional and global markets.

This development reinforces MICT’s position as a key gateway in Southeast Asia, the firm owned by billionaire Enrique Razon Jr. said.

Hapag-Lloyd’s entry into the Philippine market comes amid a broader expansion strategy across Asia. The feeder service is designed to support growing cargo volumes in the region and improve schedule reliability for clients.

ICTSI, founded in 1988 and headquartered in Manila, operates 33 terminals in 20 countries. The company is known for its public-private partnerships and continues to invest in terminal infrastructure in emerging and developed markets.

The addition of the feeder service is expected to support growing intra-Asia trade and help reduce transit times for Philippine-bound cargo.
