Globe backs site blocking law as CEO warns piracy ‘steals opportunity from our future’

The Ayala Group's Globe Telecom is stepping up its campaign against digital piracy, warning that the lack of a permanent site blocking law is putting the country’s P2-trillion creative economy at risk.

The call follows the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines’ (IPOPHL) recent directive for internet service providers to restrict access to piracy streaming sites.

“Every time someone streams or downloads illegally, we steal opportunity from our future,” said Globe president and CEO Carl Cruz.

“If we want Filipino talent to shine globally, we must protect their work at home,” he said.

“By standing united against piracy, we give our creators the chance to thrive and the nation a stronger creative future,” he added.

Cruz said a formal site blocking law would give IPOPHL the legal power to enforce take-downs and protect Filipino creators from lost income and cyber threats.

Globe has already blocked 24 infringing sites under the agency’s voluntary framework but said legislative backing is needed to make enforcement permanent.
