Philippine merchandise exports surged 27.8 percent in August to $9.11 billion, their highest monthly value in 35 years, as electronics shipments powered another month of strong overseas sales.

Preliminary data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) showed exports extended their year-on-year growth streak to 20 consecutive months.

The August tally was up from $8.16 billion a year earlier, adding to gains that lifted exports in the first eight months of 2026 to $64.04 billion. That was 14.8 percent higher than the $55.80 billion recorded in the comparable period last year, according to the Department of Trade and Industry.

Electronics powered Philippine exports to a 35-year high of $9.11 billion in August, fueled by strong global demand for AI and data centers.

Electronics lead

Electronic products accounted for much of the August increase, recording a $2.32-billion year-on-year gain—the biggest among commodity groups.

Electronics remained the Philippines’ largest export, generating $6.20 billion or 68.1 percent of total shipments during the month, the DTI said.

The sector benefited from sustained global demand associated with artificial intelligence and data centers, according to the DTI.

Other mineral products were the second-biggest export commodity at $393.54 million, accounting for 4.3 percent of the total, followed by gold at $321.27 million or 3.5 percent.

Gold exports increased by $41.83 million from a year earlier, while electronic equipment and parts posted a $32.09-million gain.

Manufactured goods dominated shipments by major type of goods, accounting for $7.69 billion or 84.4 percent of total exports. Mineral products contributed $800.62 million, or 8.8 percent, while agro-based products accounted for $455.26 million, or 5 percent.

US stays on top

The United States remained the Philippines’ biggest export destination in August, buying $2.17 billion worth of goods, equivalent to 23.8 percent of the month's total.

Hong Kong ranked second with $1.57 billion, followed by China with $1.05 billion, Japan with $704.49 million and Taiwan with $516.01 million.

Trade Secretary Cristina Roque said the latest figures reflected Filipino exporters’ ability to compete in overseas markets.

“Filipino exporters continue to demonstrate their capability to compete and succeed globally. This 35-year high builds on the sustained export growth we have achieved since last year, proving that the international market is ready and eager for Philippine products,” Roque said.

She said the DTI would continue helping companies meet local and international standards, connect with buyers and enter new markets.

Beyond electronics

Despite the strong overall performance, the DTI said some agriculture and agro-processed export industries continued to contend with supply and logistics constraints.

The agency said it was working with the private sector to address these problems while stepping up efforts to diversify the country's export markets.

In August, the DTI-Export Marketing Bureau continued overseas promotions aimed at connecting Philippine companies with new buyers.

Eleven Philippine food companies, for instance, joined the country's first national participation in Fine Food Australia, which opened in Melbourne on Aug. 31. The Philippine pavilion featured halal-certified, healthy, natural and premium food products targeting Australia and the wider Oceania market.

“Trade promotion must lead to real sales, repeat orders and long-term partnerships for our exporters,” Roque said. —Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
