Canva is positioning itself as more than just a design platform, rolling out a major upgrade that aims to turn it into a central workspace where ideas are created, executed, and delivered.

The launch of Canva AI 2.0 marks a strategic shift for the company, as it seeks to evolve into a system where work gets done—bringing together design, productivity, and collaboration into a single platform.

Big shift

The update, unveiled at the Canva Create event in Los Angeles, introduces a new generation of AI-powered tools designed to streamline the entire creative process—from ideation to final output.

Canva said in a statement that the new system transforms its platform into a “conversational, agentic” workspace, allowing users to generate and refine content through natural language prompts.

The move builds on the company’s rapid growth, with more than 250 million monthly users worldwide.

Industry nod

Amid this push, Canva continues to strengthen its position in the broader AI ecosystem, emerging as one of the fastest-growing platforms in customer spending on AI products, according to venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz.

This reflects increasing demand for tools that combine creativity, automation, and productivity in one environment.

How it works

At the core of Canva AI 2.0 is a new architecture that reimagines how users create content.

Instead of starting with a blank page, users can describe an idea, and the platform generates a complete, editable design. The system remains interactive throughout the process, allowing users to refine and iterate without starting over.

It also introduces “agentic orchestration,” which connects Canva’s tools behind the scenes to produce full outputs—from campaign plans to multi-format content—based on a single prompt.

Another feature, object-based intelligence, enables precise edits without affecting the rest of the design, while a “living memory” function adapts to user preferences over time.

Workflow integration

Beyond design, Canva is expanding into everyday work tasks.

New connectors allow the platform to integrate with tools such as Slack, Gmail, Google Drive, Notion, and Zoom, enabling users to generate content directly from conversations, emails, and schedules.

Automation features also allow tasks to run in the background, such as generating weekly content or preparing meeting briefs.

The platform now includes built-in web research, brand management tools, and enhanced spreadsheet capabilities through Sheets AI.

All-in-one platform

Canva is also extending its capabilities into interactive content through Canva Code 2.0, which allows users to create and edit web-based experiences, including importing and modifying HTML files.

These updates aim to reduce reliance on multiple tools by consolidating workflows into a single environment.

The company said this approach helps teams move faster, cutting hours of manual work into seconds.

AI at the core

Driving these capabilities is Canva’s expanding AI research unit, which focuses on building models tailored for design workflows.

The company said its proprietary models are significantly faster and more cost-efficient than comparable alternatives, enabling rapid development and deployment of new features.

This investment supports Canva’s broader strategy to scale AI across its global user base.

Ecosystem expansion

Canva is also deepening partnerships within the AI space, including an expanded collaboration with Anthropic.

The integration allows users to bring outputs from platforms like Claude and ChatGPT directly into Canva, where they can be edited, refined, and published.

This positions Canva as a bridge between AI-generated content and production-ready outputs.

What’s next

Canva AI 2.0 launched as a research preview on April 16, initially rolling out to one million users before expanding to a wider audience.
