Aboitiz Foods is bringing both solar light and compassion to disaster-hit communities in Malaysia. Through its subsidiary Gold Coin Malaysia, the company is helping rebuild lives in flood-stricken Sabah while illuminating rural villages in Sarawak with sustainable, solar-powered lighting.

The initiatives reflect Aboitiz Foods’ growing focus on long-term, community-driven progress—one that shines brightest where it’s needed most.

In Sarawak, the Brighter Communities project installed solar lamps and outdoor lights in villages where electricity is scarce. The effort benefits about 150 residents, giving families safer, brighter nights and students better conditions to study.

Gold Coin country director for Malaysia and Brunei James Kueh said in a press release that the initiative is “more than just tools for illumination,” adding that these lights represent “opportunities for a better quality of life and endless possibilities.”

The project also trains residents in system maintenance to ensure the lights keep shining—an approach that emphasizes sustainability over short-term aid. Partnering with local leaders, Gold Coin aims to improve daily life while advancing renewable energy access.

Helping rebuild after the floods

In neighboring Sabah, the company turned compassion into action again, aiding families devastated by floods and landslides. Together with the Lions Club of Penampang, Gold Coin distributed over 200 bags of rice, 50 wheelbarrows, and 20 pressure cleaners, among other essentials, to help with cleanup and home repairs.

Despite the terrain challenges, volunteers joined residents in clearing debris and rebuilding—an embodiment of the Aboitiz group’s “shared progress” ethos.
