Toyota's HEAL mobility project boosts healthcare access in Philippines

Insider Spotlight

  • Toyota's mobility push: Toyota Mobility Foundation (TMF) and Toyota Motor Philippines Foundation (TMP Foundation) are launching a new healthcare mobility initiative in the Philippines.
  • Targeting access: The "Healthcare Mobility for All (HEAL)" project aims to improve access to healthcare for patients and support medical professionals.
  • Dual approach: The program introduces mobile clinics to bring services to underserved areas and shuttle services for Philippine General Hospital (PGH) healthcare workers.

The Toyota Mobility Foundation (TMF), in partnership with Toyota Motor Philippines Foundation (TMP Foundation) and the Philippine General Hospital (PGH), officially unveiled the "Healthcare Mobility for All (HEAL) Project" on July 25, 2025. This new initiative seeks to bridge the gap in healthcare access through innovative mobility solutions, running until December 2026.

Why it matters:

The program addresses critical challenges faced by Filipinos in accessing medical care and by healthcare workers in their daily commutes. Patients often endure long and complicated journeys for consultations, while medical staff, particularly during off-peak hours, struggle with limited transport options.

The big picture:

HEAL introduces two key mobility solutions:

  • Mobile clinics: Two Toyota Coaster units will be converted into mobile clinics, offering essential diagnostic services directly to patients in areas like Cavite, where access to PGH is difficult. These clinics will integrate with PGH's existing IT systems for online booking and a new queueing system for efficiency.
  • Shuttle service: Three Tamaraw UV-based shuttles will be deployed to provide safe and efficient transport for PGH healthcare professionals, especially those working late night or early morning shifts. This aims to reduce reliance on multiple public transportation transfers, cut commuting expenses, and minimize safety concerns.
  • Driving the initiative: The program is supported by Toyota Mobility Solutions Philippines (TMSPH) as the mobility partner, Toyota Motor Philippines Corporation (TMP) as the engagement partner, and the Deloitte Future of Mobility Solution Centre for development and implementation.

What they're saying:

Susumu Matsuda, deputy chair of the board of Toyota Mobility Foundation, emphasized the program's core principle: "Mobility equals opportunity—this is what HEAL symbolizes. With strong partnership with Toyota Motor Philippines Foundation and Philippine General Hospital, we are excited to connect people to the care they need, when and where they need it, we are supporting lives, communities, and a more inclusive future in Philippines."

Alfred Ty, chair of Toyota Motor Philippines Foundation, affirmed this commitment: "As this year marks our 35th anniversary, TMP Foundation renews its commitment to uplift the quality of life of many Filipinos. We believe that our 'Mobility plus Health' advocacy can empower and change lives. We have seen how efficient transportation can positively contribute to patient care and public health professionals. That is why we are proud to be part of this program — to make basic healthcare accessible for all."

Dr. Gerardo Legaspi, director of the Philippine General Hospital, highlighted the urgent need: "At Philippine General Hospital, we see every day how mobility shapes the healthcare journey—for both patients who travel great distances to seek care and the dedicated professionals who provide it. As the healthcare partner for HEAL, we will provide the medical services within each mobile clinic while also supporting shuttle service operations for our medical personnel. Together, we are working to build the future of healthcare—one that maintains the highest standards of care while bringing it closer to the communities we serve."

What's next:

The HEAL program is a pilot initiative that TMF hopes can be replicated across Asia, demonstrating how mobility innovations can foster greater opportunity and equity in healthcare.
