Speaking at the 24th MAP International CEO Conference, SM Investments president and CEO Frederic C. DyBuncio said the group's experience operating in the Philippines has shaped its approach to periods of uncertainty and disruption. The conference carried the theme “In the Age of Flux: Scaling the Next Inflection Points.”
Long-term growth potential
SM Investments is positioning long-term demand, particularly outside Metro Manila, as a key consideration for companies trying to separate structural shifts from short-term market noise.
“At SM, nearly seven decades in the Philippines have taught us to look beyond the cycle. We have seen periods of uncertainty, disruption and rapid change. Through them, one thing has remained constant: the long-term potential of the Philippines and the aspirations of the Filipino people,” DyBuncio said in a press statement.
DyBuncio pointed to regional markets as an area where changing incomes and consumer aspirations are creating opportunities.
Opportunity assessment
“That potential is increasingly visible beyond Metro Manila. As incomes rise and aspirations evolve, opportunities are opening across the regions. For businesses, this means looking beyond where growth has traditionally been concentrated and investing where the next generation of demand is emerging,” he added.
Technology is also changing how companies assess those opportunities. Artificial intelligence and data can help businesses spot patterns more quickly, but the conference discussions emphasized that executives still have to determine what matters, where capital should go and when to act.
Investing with discipline
SM Investments said its long-term approach is reflected across its retail, banking, property and portfolio businesses, including expansion beyond traditional economic centers.
Those businesses fund their own growth while generating dividends for SM Investments, giving the parent company exposure to their expansion over time.
The underlying strategy, according to SM Investments, remains centered on understanding where demand is heading, investing with discipline and staying close to customers. —Vanessa Hidalgo | Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
