Weekend hopping for bonds? Treasury brings RTB32 to Gateway Mall on Oct. 4

The Bureau of the Treasury is shopping government bonds at the shopping mall, breaking from its traditional roadshows to bring investing closer to ordinary Filipinos.

The push moves to Gateway Mall (Level 3 near Food Express) on Oct. 4, where shoppers can walk up to an RTB32 pop-up booth, ask bank representatives questions and learn how to invest on the spot.

It follows an initial stop at TriNoma on Oct. 2 and marks the first time the Treasury is using mall pop-ups to promote investing in government debt.

The agency has traditionally promoted Retail Treasury Bonds through roadshows, including stops in the provinces, but the mall format puts the product before a broader crowd that may have little exposure to the bond market.

RTB32 is designed for that wider market, requiring just P5,000 to start and paying 6.875 percent a year, with interest distributed quarterly over its 2.5-year life.

The push also comes as the government marks 25 years of Retail Treasury Bonds, which have raised more than P6 trillion since their introduction in 2001.

Investors have until Oct. 7 to buy RTB32 through authorized banks and digital channels including GBonds via GCash, PDAX, Landbank, OFBank, ATRAM and RCBC Pulz, with issuance set for Oct. 12.
