The milestone container was processed on Dec. 22, when the terminal serviced the vessel Ever Bliss operated by Evergreen Marine Corp., carrying cargo for Universal Robina Corp..
MICT chief executive officer Christian Lozano said the record reflected the terminal’s ability to manage higher volumes while maintaining service reliability during peak periods.
“Handling three million TEUs shows how the MICT has kept pace with rising demand through continued operational improvements and capacity expansion,” Lozano said in a statement on Monday.
MICT’s momentum sustained by investments
The achievement marks a scale reached by larger regional terminals, but one that remains rare in the Philippine context, particularly for a single facility operating within a capacity-constrained port system.
The volume growth was supported by continued investments during the year, including hybrid rubber-tired gantry cranes, additional terminal tractors, and early trials of electric terminal tractors under its modernization program.
Construction is also progressing on Berth 8, a 300-meter quay with a 12-hectare quay-and-yard development, 6.5 hectares of which are already operational.
Once the expansion is completed, MICT’s annual handling capacity is expected to rise to 3.5 million TEUs, reinforcing its position as the country’s largest and busiest container terminal, accounting for about 70 percent of Manila port volumes.
