In a statement, Maynilad reported cleaning 542.13 kilometers of sewer lines last year, exceeding its target by 8.43 percent.
With a budget of P21.7 million, the cleaning operations covered key urban areas such as Manila, Quezon City, Muntinlupa, Makati, Pasay, and Parañaque.
It employed high-powered sewer jetting and vacuum truck units to efficiently remove blockages caused by improper waste disposal—including wet wipes, plastics, grease, and construction debris.
These advanced techniques not only prevent potential sewer overflows but also ensure that wastewater reaches treatment facilities in a timely manner, where it is processed to meet strict environmental standards, Maynilad said in the statement.
Close collaboration with local government units and national agencies further bolstered the operation.
These partnerships were essential in overcoming access challenges, such as sewer manholes obstructed by asphalt pavements or damaged during road and drainage projects, ensuring that cleaning activities proceeded smoothly without delays, it said.
“This cleaning effort is essential to ensuring that wastewater from households reaches our treatment plants, where it is treated to meet environmental standards before being safely discharged into bodies of water,” stated Engr. Zmel Grabillo, head of the Maynilad wastewater management division.
Beyond sewer line maintenance, Maynilad also provides septic tank desludging services at no additional charge for households in non-sewered areas, reinforcing its commitment to comprehensive wastewater management. — Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
