The Cupang WRF now processes wastewater from Barangays Alabang, Cupang, and Bayanan with a treatment capacity of 46 million liters per day (MLD). The facility is part of Maynilad’s long-term plan to expand sewerage coverage and protect waterways by eliminating pollutants before safe discharge.
It is one of two new wastewater facilities recently completed in Muntinlupa. Along with the Tunasan WRF, the Cupang plant significantly raises the city’s wastewater treatment capacity, contributing to better sanitation and environmental protection across the West Zone.

Upgrading for DENR compliance
Maynilad has begun upgrading the Cupang WRF to comply with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) effluent standards under DAO 2016-08, as amended by DAO 2021-19. These stricter guidelines set limits on key wastewater parameters to safeguard public health and ecosystems.
“We are not only expanding our wastewater treatment capacity—we’re also future-proofing our facilities to comply with the latest environmental standards,” said Maynilad president and CEO Ramoncito S. Fernandez. “These investments reflect our commitment to sustainability and regulatory compliance as our communities continue to grow.”
Commitment to sustainability
While DAO compliance was not part of the Cupang WRF’s original design, Maynilad integrated the upgrade to ensure long-term regulatory alignment. The company has kept the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) informed throughout the process.
Maynilad, the largest private water concessionaire in the Philippines by customer base, serves the MWSS West Zone covering parts of Metro Manila and Cavite. By investing in wastewater infrastructure, the utility aims to meet growing demand while advancing its mission to safeguard water resources for future generations. —Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
