Located along Buendia Street in Barangay Tunasan, the Tunasan WRF is Maynilad’s 25th wastewater treatment facility. It can treat up to 20 million liters of used water per day (MLD), serving around 83,000 customers within the Tunasan catchment area.
Wastewater from Magdaong, Bubogan, and Tunasan Creeks is conveyed via 1.4 kilometers of sewer pipelines into the facility, where it undergoes multi-stage treatment before being discharged into Bubogan Creek.
Why it matters
The new WRF supports efforts to reduce pollution loading into Laguna de Bay, a key water resource and economic lifeline for surrounding communities. It also advances compliance with stricter environmental rules.
The facility uses the Modified Ludzack–Ettinger (MLE) process, a modern biological treatment technology designed to significantly reduce pollutants. It meets effluent quality standards under DENR DAO 2016-08, as amended by DAO 2021-19.
What they’re saying
“Every wastewater facility we build is more than infrastructure—it is a commitment to public health, a step toward cleaner waterways, and an investment in a future where communities can thrive alongside a healthy environment,” Maynilad president and CEO Ramoncito S. Fernandez said in a press statement.
“By expanding sewerage coverage here in Muntinlupa and investing in modern treatment technologies, we help safeguard Laguna de Bay and strengthen responsible wastewater management in the West Zone,” he added.
The big picture
The project was implemented with the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS), the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), the Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA), and the Muntinlupa City Government.
With Tunasan WRF online, Maynilad’s total wastewater treatment capacity rises to 790 MLD, supporting its broader program to accelerate sewerage and sanitation services in Metro Manila and contribute to Laguna de Bay’s rehabilitation. —Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
