EJ Obiena, world stars headline Atletang Ayala Pole Vault Challenge

Fresh from his stint at the Paris 2024 Olympics, Filipino pole vault star EJ Obiena shared an ambitious vision: to bring an international pole vault competition to the Philippines.

For Obiena, it was not just a personal milestone but a gift to the nation—a chance to showcase elite-level athletics on home soil and inspire Filipino fans.

“I will try to get the Olympic finalists and have a really good competition in the Philippines. I think the country deserves that,” he told reporters after the Paris Games.

This weekend, his dream becomes reality.

Atletang Ayala World Pole Vault Challenge

On Sept. 21, 2025, the Ayala Triangle in Makati City will become a stage for the Atletang Ayala World Pole Vault Challenge—the first international pole vault event on Philippine soil.

Sanctioned by the World Athletics Continental Tour–Bronze Category, the competition brings together Obiena and eight of the world’s best, including:

  • Ersu Sasma (Turkey, World No. 5)
  • Menno Vloon (Netherlands, No. 6)
  • Thibaut Collet (France, No. 12)
  • Ben Broeders (Belgium, No. 13)
  • Austin Miller (USA, No. 14)
  • Piotr Lisek (Poland, No. 15)
  • Oleg Zernikel (Germany, No. 16)
  • Matt Ludwig (USA, No. 23)

For Filipino fans, it’s a rare chance to see Olympic-caliber athletes soar against the Manila skyline.

More than points, it’s about pride

For Obiena, the competition is the highlight of his 2025 season, even after a challenging campaign capped by his exit at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. Beyond world ranking points, he looks forward to competing in front of Filipino fans.

“More than experiencing this event myself, I’m excited to give this experience to Filipino sports fans. Like I said last year, the country deserves this. Filipinos deserve to enjoy this level of competition, to have something to cheer for,” he said.

Bayanihan spirit in action

The event was first announced on July 7, just over 70 days ago, with Ayala Foundation and the MVP Sports Foundation stepping in as early partners. Obiena then called on organizations and individuals to support his dream. The response was overwhelming.

Today, the event is backed by 32 companies and endorsed by the Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association, World Athletics, and Asian Athletics.

“It’s just been over 70 days since we announced this event. I can’t believe we’re just a couple of days away. I’m so grateful to everyone who pitched in. I’m blown away by the support that we’ve received, and I cannot wait to see everyone at the Ayala Triangle!” Obiena said.
