Motorists aren’t the only ones looking forward to toll-free travel on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. San Miguel Corp. (SMC) and its chair and CEO, Ramon Ang, share the sentiment.

Ang emphasized that the annual toll waiver across SMC-operated expressways is a heartfelt gesture of gratitude to the public.

“This is our way of saying thank you to everyone who uses the expressways we operate,” said Ang.

“It’s something we look forward to every year because it helps thousands of motorists get home to their families a little easier, especially during Christmas and New Year,” he added.

Free use of expressways

SMC announced the waiving toll fees across its expressways on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.

The toll-free period applies to the Skyway System, NAIA Expressway (NAIAX), South Luzon Expressway (SLEX), STAR Tollway, and Tarlac-Pangasinan-La Union Expressway (TPLEX) from 10:00 p.m. on Dec. 24 to 6:00 a.m. on Dec. 25, and again from 10:00 p.m. on Dec. 31 to 6:00  a.m. on Jan. 1, 2025.

Traffic monitoring efforts

To ensure smooth traffic flow, SMC has suspended all roadworks from Dec. 20, 2024 to Jan. 3, 2025, and deployed additional patrollers, emergency responders, and tow trucks at key areas.

Traffic monitoring centers will operate round-the-clock, while SMC coordinates with local government traffic management offices to minimize congestion near expressway exits.

Motorists are advised to load their Autosweep RFID accounts in advance to avoid delays at toll exits and to avoid tailgating for proper tag scanning.

Those who have yet to register can sign up for the free Autosweep RFID, with loading options available online, via e-wallets, or at service centers across the network.

Ensure cars are safe

SMC also reminds motorists to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before traveling to reduce potential incidents.

“We appeal to our motorists for patience as we anticipate heavy traffic around Metro Manila, which may affect their travel plans or scheduled flights. We advise them to plan their trips ahead and allot more time for travel, to make sure they arrive at their destinations on time,” the company said.
