TikTok Shop is strengthening consumer protection measures in the Philippines through stricter seller verification, product compliance checks and buyer support mechanisms as online shopping platforms face growing scrutiny over counterfeit and unsafe products.

The e-commerce platform reported that it rejected more than 208 million products globally before listing between July 2025 and July 2026, according to its latest Global Safety Report.

The figure represented 99 percent of products found to violate platform policies that were proactively removed before reaching consumers. Another two million restricted or prohibited products were removed after listing, TikTok Shop said in a statement.

The measures form part of TikTok Shop's efforts to improve transaction safety and consumer confidence as more Filipinos use digital platforms to purchase goods and services.

Stronger safeguards

TikTok Shop said its consumer protection framework includes seller verification, product compliance screening, automated detection technology and intellectual property protection measures.

These safeguards are designed to prevent counterfeit goods, unsafe products and sellers violating platform rules from reaching consumers.

The platform also provides post-purchase assistance through return and refund procedures, allowing buyers to seek remedies when transactions fail to meet expectations.

TikTok Shop Philippines head of public policy Yves Gonzalez said consumer protection requires both platform safeguards and access to reliable product information.

“At TikTok Shop, we want our shoppers to feel confident about buying on the platform. This is why we work hard to develop and implement safeguards across the shopping journey, from product listing and seller compliance to post-purchase assistance," Gonzalez said.

"We also recognize that consumers need clear, accessible information to understand product details, assess potential risks, and know what steps they can take when a concern arises. Through our #TikTokShopSmart campaign, we are able to empower consumers to make informed shopping decisions.”

Consumer education

In observance of Consumer Welfare Month, TikTok Shop is also working with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to strengthen consumer education through its #TikTokShopSmart campaign.

The initiative aims to help online shoppers assess product and seller information, recognize potential transaction risks and understand available complaint and assistance channels.

As part of the collaboration, TikTok contributed a session to a consumer organization assembly focused on communicating product safety information and consumer rights through digital platforms.

The session, titled “Sharing Product Safety Online: How to Turn Product Safety Information into Consumer Action,” was led by Filipino business consultant, certified public accountant and content creator J. Em Ang.

The discussion focused on making technical product safety information more accessible to consumers and encouraging informed purchasing decisions.
