The initiative earned the Commercial Centers Division of Robinsons Land Corp. (RLC) recognition as an Energy Efficiency and Conservation Champion at the inaugural Philippine Energy Awards organized by the Department of Energy (DOE) on Oct. 7.
The 5.8 million kWh, or 5.8 gigawatt-hours (GWh), in avoided grid electricity imports is equivalent to the average monthly electricity consumption of approximately 29,000 Filipino households, according to the company.
The reduction reflects the company's efforts to manage electricity consumption through energy-efficient building operations, energy-saving technologies and participation in government-led conservation programs.
Energy management
Robinsons Malls said energy efficiency has become an integral part of its operations as commercial establishments face growing pressure to manage electricity costs and reduce their environmental impact.
The company has adopted energy-saving measures across its properties while seeking to maintain the comfort, safety and convenience of shoppers.
“Energy efficiency has long been integrated into Robinsons Malls' operations through thoughtful building design, the adoption of energy-saving technologies, and participation in government-led conservation programs. These measures help make its properties more environmentally responsible while maintaining the comfort, safety, and convenience that mallgoers expect”, explained Robinsons Malls deputy business unit general manager Maria Kristina Real-Lim in a statement.
Among its initiatives is participation in the DOE's O.N.E. (Oras Natin sa Efficiency) campaign, which was introduced at Robinsons Galleria in May 2026.
Under the program, Robinsons Malls nationwide switch off nonessential lighting every Monday from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. as part of voluntary efforts to reduce electricity demand.
The initiative aims to encourage businesses and consumers to adopt practical conservation measures, particularly during periods of elevated electricity demand.
Beyond compliance
The DOE recognized Robinsons Malls for implementing voluntary energy conservation initiatives that go beyond regulatory requirements under Republic Act No. 11285, or the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act.
Energy Secretary Sharon Garin and Energy Undersecretary Felix William Fuentebella presented the award to RLC corporate energy head Lucky Jay Damaso during a ceremony held alongside two major ASEAN energy industry gatherings.
Real-Lim said the recognition reinforced the company's efforts to improve resource management across its properties.
“This recognition from the Department of Energy affirms our commitment to continuously improve how we manage our resources and operate our malls,” Real-Lim said.
“As a company serving millions of Filipinos across the country, we recognize our responsibility to contribute to a more sustainable future. We are grateful to the DOE for this recognition, which inspires us to further strengthen our efforts in energy efficiency and conservation.”
Business Implications
Energy efficiency has become increasingly important for commercial property operators because electricity is a major operating expense for shopping malls, particularly those requiring extensive lighting, air-conditioning and ventilation.
Reducing grid electricity requirements can help businesses manage energy costs while supporting broader efforts to ease demand on the country's power system.
For Robinsons Malls, continued investment in energy-efficient operations forms part of its long-term approach to managing commercial properties while supporting national energy conservation objectives. —Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
