The management of PLDT Inc., led by business tycoon Manuel V. Pangilinan, stood firm on the September 2024 start of negotiations with employees amid a looming strike by its rank-and-file workers.

PLDT issued the statement on Monday after the Manggagawa sa Komunikasyon ng Pilipinas (MKP), the bargaining representative of the PLDT workers, conducted a successful strike vote on May 14 and 15 this year.

PLDT people group first vice president Joseph Michael Co said in the statement the planned strike has “no valid basis” since their collective bargaining agreement expires months away on Nov. 8, 2024.

Citing the Labor Code, PLDT said the parties are tasked to meet and negotiate the renewal or modification of the terms of the CBA at least 60 days prior to its expiry. In this case, that period begins in the first week of September.

“PLDT respects its workers’ rights to self-organization within the bounds of law,” the telco giant said in the statement.
