DTI chief urges PH firms to fast-track digital transformation

Trade and Industry Secretary Cristina A. Roque urged Philippine businesses to speed up digital transformation, calling it a national priority under President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.

“The digital age is no longer a distant horizon, it is the ground we stand on. We must adapt aggressively and urgently because this is what our country needs, especially as we are 7,600 islands competing in a world that is already digital,” Roque said at the 51st Philippine Business Conference & Expo (PBC&E) media launch on Aug. 18.

Why it matters

Roque stressed that digitalization is central to the Department of Trade and Industry’s (DTI) three mandates: advancing trade and investments, strengthening consumer protection, and enabling micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

Through digital tools, she said, DTI aims to expand market access, safeguard e-commerce, and equip MSMEs to compete globally.

The big picture

The Philippines has shown steady economic growth, marked by rising exports, foreign investments, and consistent GDP expansion. Roque said these gains position the country to thrive in the digital economy — but only if the private sector accelerates its adoption of digital solutions.

“Our success depends on the strength of our partnership with the private sector. The government can set the stage, but it is your collective vision, courage, and action that will truly unleash the power of digital transformation,” she told business leaders.

What’s next

With three years left in the Marcos administration, Roque urged companies to align with the “Bagong Pilipinas” vision and partner with the government in shaping policies and initiatives that help businesses — particularly MSMEs — harness digitalization for growth.
