In its 2025 ESG report, the technology firm said it is embedding sustainability principles across its “Human × Car × Home” ecosystem, while accelerating efforts to develop climate-resilient products and support a circular economy.
“Our strategy is to integrate ESG into daily operations, driven by our core technologies,” Xiaomi said, pointing to continued investments in innovation and governance.
Tech, governance
Xiaomi’s research and development spending reached RMB33.1 billion in 2025, with more than 25,000 personnel—accounting for 45 percent of its workforce—focused on advancing its technology capabilities.
The company has built an artificial intelligence framework combining foundation models and scenario-based applications, enabling broader functionality and more precise use cases across its ecosystem.
It recently introduced three self-developed large AI models, including Xiaomi MiMo-V2-Pro, which quickly gained global traction and ranked among the top AI models on international platforms.
To address risks from evolving global AI regulations, Xiaomi said it is aligning its practices with international standards, including the European Union’s guidelines for trustworthy AI. The company aims to ensure its AI systems remain fair, secure, and transparent.
Data security
Xiaomi also emphasized its commitment to data protection, with certifications such as ISO 27001 and ISO 27701 covering its operations.
The company has developed its own secure operating system, MiTEE, which isolates sensitive data—including payment credentials and digital keys—within devices to prevent external access.
For cross-device usage, Xiaomi follows strict principles such as end-to-end protection and user authorization to ensure consistent data security.
It added that all data subject requests are processed within 15 days globally, exceeding regulatory requirements in some jurisdictions.
Green products
Guided by “reduce, reuse, recycle” principles, Xiaomi continues to improve resource efficiency across its product lifecycle.
Several smartphone models now use recycled materials, while charger housings incorporate post-consumer plastics. The company has also introduced energy-saving technologies, including ultra-low standby power chargers designed to reduce electricity consumption.
More than 2 million smartphones were recycled through trade-in programs in 2025, with initiatives now spanning 24 markets worldwide.
Climate action
Xiaomi said it is aligning its emissions reduction efforts with global climate targets, including the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C pathway.
Its manufacturing facilities have adopted energy-efficient systems, including heat recovery technologies and optimized production processes that reduce electricity use.
The company is also shifting logistics from air to sea and rail transport, cutting carbon emissions by over 2,400 tonnes in 2025.
In addition, Xiaomi significantly expanded its use of renewable energy, procuring over 40 million kWh of green electricity during the year.
As it continues to invest in clean technologies and smart systems, Xiaomi said it aims to deliver a more sustainable and integrated user experience globally. — Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
