Western Union has launched a new mobile app in the Philippines, making the country the first global market to access an app that lets consumers both send and request money internationally.

The app enables users to send funds abroad seamlessly through Western Union’s global network, which spans billions of bank accounts, millions of digital wallets and cards, and hundreds of thousands of retail outlets for cash payout.

Dual remittance capabilities

Payments can be made securely using the Philippines’ national QR code system, QR Ph, with sign-up taking only minutes.

Beyond sending, Filipinos can now request remittances from family and friends overseas in markets such as the United States, Australia, Singapore, and the United Kingdom.

Senders abroad can complete the process online, while receivers in the Philippines may choose to withdraw cash, deposit to a bank account, or transfer directly to a digital wallet. They may also redirect inbound funds to their preferred channel even after a transfer has been initiated.

Added convenience

The app also comes with a real-time tracking feature. Consumers can monitor transfers by entering their Money Transfer Control Number (MTCN), giving them added visibility and peace of mind.

“Today’s launch marks an important milestone in our effort to serve consumers in the Philippines better and connect them to their families and loved ones across the world,” said Gregory Laurent, Western Union’s vice president for the Philippines, Japan, Australia, New Zealand & Pacific Islands.

“Our new app provides the opportunity to both send and request funds—with the flexibility and trust Western Union can provide.”

Remittances at record highs

Remittances remain a vital lifeline for the Philippine economy. Data from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas showed that cash remittances reached a record $38 billion in 2024, with the United States as the largest source, followed by Singapore.

According to the World Bank, the Philippines ranked fourth among low- and middle-income countries in remittance inflows last year.
