TESDA, Nestlé deepen partnership to upskill coffee farmers

The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) and Nestlé Philippines have reaffirmed their partnership to support Filipino smallholder farmers, particularly in the coffee sector, through expanded training and sustainable livelihood programs.

The collaboration, anchored on the NESCAFÉ Plan, aims to improve productivity, enhance the quality of locally grown coffee, and create more economic opportunities in rural communities.

Stronger support

TESDA Secretary Kiko Benitez recently met with Nestlé Philippines officials to discuss ways to deepen cooperation, with a focus on equipping coffee farmers with relevant skills and access to modern technologies.

Key areas of support include training in improved farming techniques, access to logistics and distribution systems, assistance with fertilizer use and post-harvest processing, and strengthening partnerships among government, industry, and local communities.

“Coffee starts with strong support from the farm all the way to your cup,” Benitez said. “Skills are the currency of the workplace, and certified skills are essential at every stage of coffee production.”

He added that TESDA is proud to partner with Nestlé in providing training that benefits both farmers and consumers.

Sustainable chain

Nestlé Philippines senior vice president and head of corporate affairs Joey Uy III said the partnership highlights the company’s commitment to advancing the welfare of coffee farmers.

“Our partnership with TESDA allows us to contribute not only to improving coffee farming practices but also to strengthening the long-term resilience of farming communities,” Uy said.

He noted that combining technical training with on-the-ground support can help build a more sustainable value chain from farm to cup.

Broader efforts

Beyond coffee, TESDA and Nestlé are also exploring collaboration in other areas, including the iSTAR Program for sari-sari store owners, Green TVET initiatives supporting the country’s transition to a net-zero economy, and e-TESDA for online learning.

Other initiatives under discussion include Gulayan sa Paaralan and community-based training programs with local government units.

Through the expanded partnership, both organizations aim to help build a more resilient agriculture sector, starting with empowered farmers and leading to more sustainable outcomes for communities. —Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
