SM Hotels ramps up MICE play with ₱5.3-B bet on Cebu and Pasay venues

SM Hotels and Convention Corp. (SMHCC), the hospitality arm of SM Prime Holdings, is investing ₱5.3 billion over the next five years to expand its footprint in the meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE) sector. The move kicks off with new convention centers in Cebu and Pasay.

Why it matters:

As tourism and business travel rebound, the demand for large-scale event venues is surging. SMHCC’s expansion taps into this momentum, targeting key growth cities with world-class infrastructure.

Details:

  • SMX Convention Center Seaside Cebu, opening Q3 2026, will be among the largest in the Visayas, offering over 21,000 sqm of leasable space across six levels.

  • Located beside SM Seaside Arena and SM Seaside Cebu Mall, the venue features integrated digital systems, pre-function halls, and robust back-of-house operations.

  • Cebu ranked among the Philippines’ top 10 provincial economies in 2023, per PSA data.

  • SMXCITE (SMX Convention Center and Integrated Theater Experience) broke ground in April 2024 at the Mall of Asia Complex in Pasay.

  • The venue will open in Q1 2027, adding 18,000 sqm of space and expanding the SMX Manila complex’s capacity to host concurrent large-scale events.

What they’re saying:

“Our expansion into Cebu and Pasay reflects our strong belief in the potential of these cities,” said SMHCC EVP Peggy Angeles. “We are enabling more communities to benefit from the business and tourism opportunities that MICE events bring.”

The big picture:

Both venues are part of SMHCC’s broader push to decentralize its events portfolio and stimulate regional economies. Co-located with hotels, malls, and transport hubs, the projects aim to deliver seamless experiences for event organizers and guests alike. —Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
