  • P1 net fare extended until Aug. 31
  • Digital fare payment adoption continues to accelerate
  • MySSS Card demand rose following the promo launch

Rizal Commercial Banking Corp. (RCBC) has extended its LRT-2 "Piso Fare" promo until Aug. 31, allowing eligible MySSS Card Powered by RCBC DiskarTech cardholders to continue enjoying a net fare of P1 per ride as the bank pushes wider adoption of digital payments for public transportation.

The extension follows the rollout of the Automated Fare Collection System on LRT-2, developed with the Department of Transportation (DOTr), the Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA), the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, and Visa.

The initiative aims to make digital banking more relevant in everyday commuting as more Filipinos rely on public transportation across Metro Manila, the company said in a release.

The big picture

Transportation Secretary Banoy Lopez welcomed the extension, saying it will help commuters save more on transportation costs.

(We thank RCBC and the SSS, as well as Finance Secretary Frederick Go, for extending this P1 fare cashback promo for LRT-2 passengers. It was originally set to end on July 31, but we have extended it until Aug. 31. This will greatly help commuters because the money they save on fares can now be used for other necessities such as school allowances, food, or medicine.)

The campaign has also gained strong early traction. The company said unique MySSS Card users tapping into the LRT-2 system jumped 95 percent within two weeks of the promo's July 13 launch, while total transit transactions increased 57 percent, suggesting commuters are increasingly adopting digital fare payments.

By the numbers

The company also reported that weekly availment of the MySSS Card Powered by RCBC DiskarTech accelerated to nearly 40 percent after the campaign began, reflecting stronger consumer interest in using digital banking products for everyday transportation.

The extension builds on the successful rollout of the Automated Fare Collection System on LRT-2, one of the country's latest efforts to expand contactless payments in public transportation. The project was developed through a collaboration among the DOTr, LRTA, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, Visa, and RCBC.

RCBC said the initiative supports broader efforts to promote digital financial inclusion by integrating banking services into everyday transactions.

Eligible MySSS Card Powered by RCBC DiskarTech cardholders receive cashback equivalent to the amount exceeding the P1 fare within three banking days after each qualified ride.

The promo covers up to eight LRT-2 rides per day, after which regular fares apply. It is also available to RCBC Visa and Mastercard credit and debit cardholders, subject to the promo's terms and conditions. — Princess Daisy C. Ominga| Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
