In a statement, the company owned by billionaire businessman Enrique Razon Jr. said the memorandum of agreement, signed on Nov. 28, builds on a prior understanding from February 2023.
The agreement focuses on the restoration, conservation, and sustainable management of 4,000 hectares of land within the Upper Marikina River Basin.
It aims to integrate afforestation, reforestation, and revegetation with sustainable livelihoods, biodiversity conservation, and climate change adaptation. The project also seeks to generate nature-based credits, aligning environmental goals with economic opportunities.
Environment Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo Loyzaga highlighted the initiative’s holistic approach, emphasizing its potential to benefit local communities and broader economic sectors.
“With this agreement, we aim to rehabilitate an initial 4,000 hectares of degraded land within the Upper Marikina protected area combining science-based approaches with community-centered efforts,” she said.
Razon described the agreement as a blueprint for future projects that prioritize ecosystem restoration and climate resilience. He underscored Prime Infra’s commitment to sustainable development, citing the firm’s existing infrastructure projects in Rizal, including the Wawa Bulk Water Supply and Wawa Pumped Storage Power projects.
The partnership aligns with the National Greening Program and contributes to the Philippines’ climate change mitigation and adaptation goals. Officials noted the project as a benchmark for public-private collaboration, emphasizing its potential to drive meaningful change in environmental stewardship and economic resilience.
Representatives from Prime Infra, DENR, and Rizal province participated in the signing ceremony, affirming their shared commitment to sustainable development.
