Insider Spotlight

  • PLDT Enterprise expands 8x8 partnership with silent authentication tech
  • SmartSafe SilentAccess removes need for SMS OTPs
  • Integration targets rising fraud and account takeovers
  • Telco-grade verification embedded in 8x8 Connect

PLDT Enterprise is escalating its campaign against mobile fraud, expanding its partnership with global communications platform 8x8 to bring silent, telco-powered authentication to more Philippine businesses.

The companies are integrating SmartSafe SilentAccess into the 8x8 Connect platform, enabling enterprises to verify mobile users without relying on traditional SMS one-time passwords — a method increasingly targeted by scammers.

The move comes as digital transactions surge nationwide, exposing banks, fintech firms, e-commerce players, and service providers to rising risks of phishing, identity theft, and account takeovers.

According to a company statement, the integration marks a new phase in the PLDT Enterprise-8x8 collaboration, which previously centered on the Smart Messaging Suite, the telco group’s Application-to-Person solution used for business messaging.

The latest expansion shifts the focus squarely to fraud prevention and secure digital onboarding.

Why it matters

SMS-based OTPs have long been the default verification tool for online transactions. But fraudsters have evolved, exploiting SIM swap schemes and social engineering tactics to intercept codes and compromise accounts.

SmartSafe SilentAccess replaces visible codes with network- and SIM-based authentication signals. Verification happens silently in the background, reducing friction for users while strengthening security controls for enterprises.

“SmartSafe SilentAccess represents an important step forward in strengthening the country’s digital infrastructure,” said Armie Sason, head of Key Industries Group 2 at PLDT Enterprise.

“At PLDT Enterprise, our shared commitment with 8x8 is to deliver secure and seamless verification for millions of mobile users. Together, we are enabling enterprises to protect their customers, reduce fraud, and support the Philippines’ ongoing digital transformation.”

For 8x8, which operates as a domestic aggregator providing CPaaS (Communications Platform as a Service) and customer engagement platforms in the Philippines, the integration enhances its value proposition to enterprise clients seeking stronger security layers without sacrificing customer experience.

Sylvain Chaperon, general manager, CPaaS, of 8x8 said the integration of SmartSafe SilentAccess strengthens the value the company delivers to its customers in the Philippines.

“By integrating PLDT Enterprise’s SmartSafe SilentAccess into our 8x8 Connect platform, we are equipping businesses with a secure and seamless way to authenticate mobile users, helping them build trust with their customers while keeping digital interactions fast and convenient.”

The big picture

For PLDT Enterprise, embedding authentication directly into partner platforms signals a broader strategy: position telco-grade network intelligence as a frontline defense in the country’s fast-growing digital economy.

As mobile engagement becomes the backbone of customer interaction, silent authentication could emerge as a competitive advantage — turning security from a compliance requirement into a business enabler. —Princess Daisy C. Ominga | Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
