These devices, known as IMSI catchers, mimic legitimate cell towers to send fake SMS messages, bypassing telco networks entirely. Victims have reported receiving spoofed messages impersonating Globe’s official sender ID for rewards and other schemes.
To combat this, Globe has been collaborating with the government to prevent the entry of IMSI catchers into the country.
The telco reminds the public to stay vigilant against suspicious text messages, avoid clicking dubious links, and note that Globe never includes clickable links in its official advisories.
Management’s view
“The arrest of a suspect linked to IMSI catchers is a breakthrough in efforts to quell these scammers who have long evaded the law. We look forward to his prosecution. May this case send a strong message to fraudsters: your time is running out,” said Atty. Froilan Castelo, Globe’s general counsel.
“Globe stands ready to support and collaborate with the government to keep the momentum going and score even more wins against fraudsters,” said Castelo.
