MVP-led Meralco unit MSpectrum Inc. has partnered with Japan's Tokyo Century Corp. (TC) and JFE Engineering Corp. (JFEE) to expand solar rooftop and ground-mounted projects for industrial facilities in the Philippines.

The companies signed a joint venture agreement establishing MSpectrum Taiyo Inc., combining MSpectrum's local renewable energy expertise, Tokyo Century's financing capabilities, and JFE Engineering's engineering experience to support the country's commercial and industrial solar market.

Under the agreement, MSpectrum will own 60 percent of the venture, while Tokyo Century and JFE Engineering will hold 30 percent and 10 percent, respectively.

The big picture

The venture aims to accelerate solar adoption among Japanese companies operating in the Philippines as businesses increasingly seek cleaner and more cost-efficient energy sources.

"Beyond supporting the growth of our organizations, this partnership aims to contribute to the country's broader energy transition by expanding access to clean and reliable energy solutions, helping businesses manage energy costs, reduce carbon emissions, and enhance their long-term competitiveness," MSpectrum chair Ronnie L. Aperocho said.

The partnership builds on the companies' collaboration under Japan's Joint Crediting Mechanism program, which supported several solar power purchase agreement projects implemented between 2019 and 2021 with backing from the Japanese government, according to a company release.

Why it matters

Tokyo Century said the Philippines' growing economy continues to drive higher electricity demand, creating opportunities for renewable energy investments among Japanese companies with local operations.

"In the Philippines, rapid economic growth has led to rising electricity demand and an urgent need for renewable energy. Introducing clean energy while reducing costs has become an important priority for many Japanese companies operating in the country,” Tokyo Century senior managing executive officer and Global Business Unit president Toshio Kitamura said.

“Through MSpectrum Taiyo, we aim to provide reliable and sustainable solar solutions that help address these needs."

JFEE will contribute experience from more than 100 megawatts of solar power purchase agreement projects in Japan and its long-standing infrastructure presence in the Philippines.

"This joint venture will provide clean energy to Japanese companies operating in the Philippines through solar PPA solutions. As demand for carbon neutrality continues to grow, we believe this collaboration will help businesses achieve their sustainability goals," JFEE managing director and head of the power business division Atsushi Kobayashi said.

Meralco chair and CEO Manuel V. Pangilinan said the partnership brings together complementary strengths that will allow the venture to deliver more reliable, more efficient, and more scalable solar solutions for commercial and industrial customers.

"It is this combination of strengths that allows us to deliver more reliable, more efficient, and more scalable solar solutions to commercial and industrial customers in the Philippines—helping businesses become more productive, more competitive, and better prepared for the future," Pangilinan said. —Princess Daisy C.
