Meralco powers up for energy transition with smart grid upgrades

Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) said it is making significant investments to upgrade its distribution network, aiming to enable the seamless integration of distributed energy resources (DERs) such as solar rooftops, battery storage systems, electric vehicles, and microgrids.

This initiative, Meralco said, is part of its broader commitment to lead the country’s transition to a more sustainable and resilient energy future.

Speaking at the Berde Renewables Collaboration Summit 2025, Meralco first vice president and head of networks Froilan J. Savet emphasized the growing complexity of power generation, which now flows in multiple directions rather than from a single source. This evolution underscores the critical role of distribution utilities like Meralco in maintaining grid stability amid rising demand for renewable energy technologies.

“Meralco is modernizing its grid to support the significant integration of renewable energy at its distribution system. We are not just distributing power to homes and businesses. We are now enabling a clean, flexible, and intelligent energy system toward a decentralized grid,” Savet said.

Central to Meralco’s grid modernization effort is its DER strategy, built on a 4-I Framework: Integration, Innovation, Intelligence, and Interoperability.

The Integration pillar ensures each new DER connection strengthens the grid rather than weakening it. Innovation involves adopting cutting-edge solutions such as battery energy storage systems, grid-forming inverters, and microgrids to build a smarter, more resilient grid.

Through the Intelligence pillar, Meralco is leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) for real-time visibility, control, and improved forecasting. The Interoperability component ensures that a variety of DER technologies operate smoothly and securely by using standardized devices, harmonized protocols, and robust cybersecurity measures.

Meralco is also upskilling its workforce to manage the complexities of a modernized grid, while engaging regulators and policymakers to stay aligned with evolving national energy policies.

“The energy transition is already happening right now,” Savet said. “In Meralco, we’re not just preparing for it. We’re enabling it.” — Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
